This past week, I attended and presented at Birthworks International Conference on "
Preventing Musculoskeletal Injuries During Pregnancy, Birth, and Postpartum." I also had the pleasure of attending the full conference, which is the first of it's kind, as it brought speakers from around the world and the most current research in Primal Health- a word coined by Dr. Michelle Odent, a obstetrician and midwife for 50 years. There was a cast of amazing Primal Health experts of which I attentively listened to and absorbed the information, as I feel Primal Health is of utmost concern to all of us, for now we know with scientific integrity what we have speculated, that what we eat, think, and feel when we are pregnant, and prior to conceiving influences our children on all levels of their well-being and their risk of developing chronic diseases later in life.
"Primal Health Research" explores correlations between the 'primal period' (fetal life, perinatal period and year following birth) and health and personality traits in later life. In the book "Primal Health" (first edition 1986)1 written by Dr. Michelle Odent, he predicted a new generation of research confirming that our health is shaped during the primal period. In order to prepare for a renewed understanding of health and diseases, a simplified vocabulary was proposed. Today the point is not to anticipate a phenomenon, but to observe its development and to draw preliminary conclusions. From 1993 onwards, Dr. Odent has begun publishing a quarterly newsletter that did just that. Since 1998 a computerised database has been made available. Access The Primal Health Database at : www.birthworks.org/site/primal-health-research/databank-keywords.html
I also had the honor of attending Pregnancy Belly dance with my very own teacher, Cathy Moore, an amazing midwife, and belly dance for birth teacher from Boston, Massachusetts. I purchased a book called "Birthing In The Spirit" at the conference, written by Cathy Daub, Founder and President of Birthworks International, licensed Physical Therapist, and Childbirth Education Teacher. I attended her workshop and I love her approach to Childbirth Education! Her book is amazing, I could not put it down on the plane ride home. I feel so excited to have a baby in the future after reading this book that to me really talks about what we REALLY need to know or be reminded of when we are pregnant or wanting to conceive. Her book is truly whole and complete. What an amazing group of people I have met, others are Dr. Bethany Hays-a Holistic Obstetrician that truly supports the vision of natural birth. A midwife from the Netherlands-Mary Zwart, who is so knowledgeable and with such a loving and tender heart. Dr. Susan Ludington who taught me that my breasts help regulate my baby's body temperature and that my skin secretes immunity for my baby. I am in awe of how amazingly perfect our bodies are, how wise, and how our culture as a whole truly needs to come back to honoring it's innate wisdom. We interfere WAY too much with nature. I am on a mission to share this experience and help us to educate ourselves with this knowledge as it has made Nurturing Moves even more effective, intelligent, and beneficial. Thank You to all the Primal Health Angels... I really wish our presidents could attend this conference, as I feel the future of our world is in the hands of those bringing in life to our next generation-the parents...
This conference has validated the mission of Nurturing Moves-that uniting modern science with love and holistic practices is truly a complete approach. It is time for us to truly embrace the current research in movement science with holistic principles, as we are so much more than just muscles and joints. Our mind/emotions/thoughts/beliefs are so powerful and influences our cervix and dilation much more than we give credit. I realized more than ever how important it is for us to be more in commune with our primal essence, to let go of thinking and just move and freely express ourSelves-dance and yoga is a beautiful way to do this in a dimly lit room... COME DANCEYOGASING with me with Nurturing Moves.
Dr. Odent and Midwife Heloisa Lessa are spearheading a Mid-Atlantic WORLD CONFERENCE on Birth and Primal Health on February 26-28, 2009 in the Grand Canary Islands that will bring leaders from all over the world in Perinatal and Primal Health. Join me for an unforgettable event that will change the way you practice midwifery, obstetrics, pediatrics, neonatology, childbirth education, yoga, pre/postnatal wellness, fitness, therapy, parenting, and beyond.
ALSO I am wanting to bring Cathy Daub to teach us a Childbirth Educators Workshop... please contact me if you like to be one of the lucky 10 who get to learn from this amazing woman!
